POINT PLEASANT — The Board of Education has adopted a $35.6 million budget with a 3.5-cent tax rate increase for the 2009-10 school year

If voters approve the budget in the April 21 school election, the owner of a home assessed at $160,000, the borough average, will pay about $56 more in school taxes next year.

Voters have passed the tax levy 11 of the last 12 years in the borough. "The budgets being successful each year gives students so many opportunities," Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith said. "We know how tough it is on citizens out there, especially in this economy. Everyone is watching every penny. But I think when a school district thrives, so does the community."

The tax-rate increase is the lowest in seven years, according to district officials.

Last year, voters passed a general fund tax levy of $25.92 million. This year they will vote on a $26.62 million tax levy in the annual school board election.
